Laparoscopy Training Game ‘Underground’ wins the Dutch Games Awards

On Tuesday evening 19 November the Nintendo Wii U Laparoscopy Trainer won the overall prize for the best serious game and the prize for the best application to a requirement from the market during the presentation of the Dutch Game Awards in Amsterdam.

Underground participated with three nominations (Best Serious Game, Best Applied Game Design and Best Music & Audio Design) in the Dutch Game Awards, the Oscars for the Dutch games industry. Never before was a serious game nominated so often, according to the organization.

Underground is a game that is produced by Grendel Games in cooperation with University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) and LIMIS. The game has been developed for surgeons in training and entry-level surgeons, who can train the skills that are necessary with laparoscopic surgery. But even experienced surgeons use the game as preparation for an operation. What is special about Underground is that the control boxes and the controller are specially developed for the game.
